‘Back to the Table’ podcast

13 July 2023:

I have just published a podcast series for www.tastelifeuk.org, a charity helping people to break free from eating disorders.

Working in collaboration with Amy Faal-Sleath, we made about half a dozen trips to the organisation’s HQ in central England, where we set up four condenser microphones around a table. Then the speakers arrived and we recorded them being guided through a conversation on a given subject by the host of the episode.

Back in our studio The Fuzbox, we edited the conversation in order create a coherent narrative and remove unwanted elements such as coughs, ideas that came out a jumble, and the odd passing truck. This concise version went into iZotope RX, passing through such processes as de-ess, de-plosive, remove mouth clicks, de-hum and spectral repair. Then this was re-imported into Logic Pro where it joined the signature tune that I had composed and the credits voiceover that Amy had recorded. Then the whole episode passed through iZotope Ozone for mastering to broadcast standards for podcasts.

I heard many uplifting stories and learned a lot that challenged my assumptions whilst making the series. We made it in memory of my cousin Fiona, who lost her battle with her eating disorder in her 40s.
